FAQs Patent Questions

Question:All submitted drawings must be drawn on strong, white, smooth, non-shiny paper

Answer:
Drawings submitted to the Office must be made on paper which is flexible, strong, white, smooth, non-shiny, and durable. All sheets must be reasonably free from cracks, creases, and folds. Only one side of the sheet may be used for the drawing.

Question:The patent law specifies that its subject matter must be useful, meaning it is able to perform its intended purpose.

Answer:
The patent law specifies that the subject matter must be “useful.” The term “useful” in this connection refers to the condition that the subject matter has a useful purpose and also includes operativeness, that is, a machine which will not operate to perform the intended purpose would not be called useful, and therefore would not be granted a patent.

Question:Where can I find information about patents obtained for stem cells?

Answer:
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office offers a full-text search of issued patents and published applications. Try searching for "stem cell" or "stem cells."
